Review

JazzTimes (p.113) - "The music is densely polyrhythmic....'Book of Right On' has a woozy, dubby quality because of the roomy recording style."
Global Rhythm (Publication) (p.48) - "[A] smokin' document of a band ripping through tightly composed but still explosive pieces that combine the funk of their native Detroit with Afrobeat and the noise-savvy Konono No. 1."
Global Rhythm (Publication) (p.43) - Ranked #10 in Global Rhythm's "Top 10 Albums Of 2006" -- "[The] party album of the year, this disc makes it absolutely impossible to stay in your seat."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.104) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Intense polyrhythms underpin huge brass riffs, and keyboard grooves leave space for extensive, apt soloing."

Title Note

Nomo: Jamie Register (vocals, bass guitar, shaker); Erik Hall (guitar, cymbals, percussion); Elliot Bergman (bass clarinet, tenor saxophone, keyboards, gamelan, kalimba); Daniel Piccolo (drums, percussion); Olman Piedra (congas, cajon drums, shekere, tambourine).

A Fela-inspired Afrobeat collective by way of Detroit, Michigan, might provoke suspicions of endless jam-band histrionics, but Nomo is tight, disciplined, and dance-focused, taking as a starting point Afrobeat's swaying rhythms as much as its extended improvisations. Its second album, NEW TONES, combines the experimental reach of Sun Ra with New Orleans voodoo on "Fourth Ward" and laid-back funk on "We Do We Go," while "Sarvodaya" is a hypnotic blend of mbira, synthesizer, and languid horn textures.
