Title Note

Personnel: Louis Armstrong (vocals, spoken vocals, trumpet); Jack Teagarden (vocals, trombone); Barney Bigard (clarinet); Bud Freeman (tenor saxophone); Trummy Young & His Lucky Seven (trombone); Billy Kyle, Earl Hines (piano); Arvell Shaw (bass instrument); Cozy Cole, Kenny John (drums).

NEW ORLEANS NIGHTS was originally released in 1950, and finds the Louis Armstrong All-Stars turning back the clock to the 1920s when Satch's hot jazz was still the secret of the Big Easy. With delightful ease and facility, the All-stars bring ragtime favorites like "Struttin' With Some Barbecue," "Basin Street Blues," and "My Bucket's Got a Hole in It" back to life nearly 30 years after their initial popularity.

Many of Armstrong's recordings with the All-Stars relied on a commercial repertoire of show tunes and pop standards, but NEW ORLEANS NIGHTS is a preferable alternative. In creating a through-line to his stylistic origins, Armstrong is able to recapture some of the vitality of his early ensembles. The fun, collective improvising from the All-Stars on these jazz gems makes revisiting the past a fine thing indeed.
