Although their striking lead singer Liela Moss is the focal point, the Duke Spirit is a band, and a popular one at that, in their native U.K. and amongst the U.S. indie-intelligentsia. Playing a spirited melding of Northern Soul, garage punk, and noisy shoegaze, the band has released two albums and a slew of singles and EPs. They have also impressed sizable crowds at Coachella and as the opening act for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, with whom they share a similar gleefully raucous vibe.

Title Note

The Duke Spirit are a well-oiled garage-punk machine who rock hard and dark and tight like Nick Cave's Bad Seeds filtered through a shoegazer edge-softener. Led by the charismatic Liela Moss, whose voice bears a strong resemblance to that of Souxsie Sioux, the band showed real promise on their 2006 debut and have hit their stride on this 2008 release, combining pop hooks with soulful grooves and noisy, gnashing guitars.
