Review

JazzTimes (p.84) - "Muldaur is the equal of all the legends she salutes....['Separation Blues'] is so devilishly good it's positively heavenly."
Living Blues (pp.42-43) - "Muldaur shines throughout, her raspy tone and wide vibrato an ideal match for the vintage material..."
No Depression (p.106) - "Muldaur eats it all up and sings it back, her voice a husky bravado, her phrasing dripping with blues and playful sensuality."

Title Note

Personnel: Maria Muldaur (vocals); ROD MCDONALD (banjo); Kim Cusack (alto saxophone); Russ Whitman (baritone saxophone); Jon-Erik Kellso (trumpet); Chris Smith , Kevin Porter (trombone); Dave Mathews, James Dapogny (piano); Kurt Krahnke (bass instrument); Pete Siers (drums); James Dapogny's Chicago Jazz Band.

Additional personnel: Bonnie Raitt (vocals).

Maria Muldaur's journey through the back pages of American popular music continues with her exploration of the racier side of the blues, in which she's accompanied by the authentically 1920s and '30s-sounding band of jazz preservationist Jim Dapogny. Joined on "Separation Blues" by Bonnie Raitt, herself no slouch as a blues singer, Muldaur navigates the earthy insinuations of "Handy Man," the teasing "One Hour Mama," and the voluptuous "Early Every Morn," breathing new life into these raunchy classics and making them her own.
