Departing from the run-of-the-mill Southern rap milieu, this self-described "cracker" is a "white trash" rapper from Tennessee, of a kind not seen since, er, Bubba Sparxxx (who, not coincidentally, makes a guest appearance on "Oh My God." Despite evincing a rather muddled grasp of racial politics on the mission statement "White Boy," Haystak is deeply indebted to the hip-hop tradition, quoting Ice Cube and matching funky jeep beats with braggadocio-loaded street themes. Once the novelty of a rapper who looks more like Cledus T. Judd than Method Man wears off, its easy to be drawn in by the sonic pleasures of THE NATURAL, from the carefully constructed production to Haystak's own down-and-dirty vocal style.
