Dean Evenson values the healing properties of music over any of its other aspects, and on this recording, he respectfully reaches out to the Native American culture to reproduce some of its most healing chants and songs. And while he puts his own gloss and spin on them, the traditional spirit remains intact.
The late Native American elder Cha-das-ska-dum Which-Ta-Lum of the Lummi Indian Nation provides the lyrics, vocals, and Native drumming. Flutes and tribal percussion convincingly recreates the Lummi milieu. As on many Native American recordings, the music here is simultaneously mournful and uplifting, reflecting the courage and struggle at their source.
