Narrow Stairs - Death Cab for Cutie
The May 13th, 2008 release, Narrow Stairs, marks Death Cab for Cutie’s seventh studio album and their second with the major record label, Atlantic (USA). The American indie pop rock band, formed in 1997 by current vocalist and guitarist Ben Gibbard, has seen great success since their previous album, Plans, reached #4 on the Billboard 200 and was recently certified as a Platinum album (1,000,000 records sold).
Narrow Stairs makes several strong statements. Moreover, its darkness instills a lasting sensation of melancholy within the listener. Sonically, it is perhaps one of the most wide-ranging albums by DC4C, yet the lyrical content is unswerving and loaded with programmatic material. References to Jack Kerouac (“Bixby Canyon Bridge”) and the 2007 California wildfires (“Grapevine Fires”) are amongst several literary and cultural themes prevalent throughout the record.
The first single, “I Will Possess Your Heart”, begins with a spellbinding five minute jam that builds constantly until Gibbard interjects with his menacing vocals, singing a love letter from a stalker. The juxtaposition of Gibbard’s naïve-sounding, choirboy voice and his lyrics, which gripe with despair, produces a truly paranormal effect. This also occurs on “Talking Bird” in which blocks of distorted sound are garnished with an angelic and tonal vocal melody.
In addition its unique content, the aural influences of Ben Folds and Beck Hansen are highlighted throughout the album, particularly in “Cath…”. An atmosphere of longing is further established by the high-ranged call and answer melodies played by the cello on the “No Sunlight” track.
By now, it is clear that Death Cab for Cutie is a multi-faceted group which is not afraid to explore their own musical boundaries and continually reinvent themselves - something which will surely result in financial success for the group itself, but also something that will give their fans tons to look forward to in the future.
