Product note

If Dream Theater, Death, and Mike Garson all shuffled their schedules accordingly and met in a rehearsal room equipped with their respective instruments, the result just might sound an awful lot like Gonin-Ish and their 2005 release, NAISHIYO-SEKAI (released three years late in the U.S.). It may sound like a hodgepodge of styles that have no business fitting together, but the Japanese band somehow isn't afraid to explore previously uncharted territory. Album opener "Tokoyami Kairou" (Eternally Dark Corridor) features complicated Dream Theater-like song structures and solos, Death-like guitar riffing, and Garson-like piano noodling. Female singer/screamer Anoji Matsuoka adds another interesting twist, purporting to sing in "ancient words from Japanese classic literature that aren't widely used in the modern world and are difficult to decipher, even for the Japanese public." With the arrival of NAISHIYO-SEKAI, Gonin-Ish have trailblazed a new style -- Japanese prog-death metal.
