Mystic Chords & Sacred Spaces (CD)

Inventive and productive, Steve Roach has been performing and recording his desert-inspired electronic music since the early 1980s. He blossomed as a composer and a world-music force with 1988's DREAMTIME RETURN, a visionary work meant to convey, expressionistically, the Australian aborigine experience, using both sampled indigenous instruments and imaginative synthesizer-generated sounds. He has released over 20 albums as a solo artist and collaborator, each of which bears his trademark fusion of exotic acoustic instruments, tribal percussion, and mesmerizing electronica. He has also produced records for likeminded artists, such as West African songwriter Takadja and South American traditionalist Jorge Reyes.

On MYSTIC CHORDS & SACRED PLACES Steve Roach has created a musical tableau intended to speak directly to the inner spirit. Each track washes over the listener as vibrant sounds radiate from Roach's vast keyboard array. This isn't music per se, but powerful sound effects. However, like musical composition, these sounds communicate to a listener in ways that conjure up vivid mental images, deep visceral feelings, and other potent emotional responses.

Roach's title links his "sound paintings" to both the mystic and to the sacred. This is fitting since all 15 tracks evoke a very real sense of solemnity and inscrutability, the hallmarks of mysticism. On "Oracle," breathy keyboard chords float effortlessly while indiscriminate pitches come swirling past one's ears. This track drones on and on, centering itself on a wavering E flat note for over 20 minutes. Yet, there is nothing boring about this piece. Instead, these sounds tend to awaken, indeed revitalize, the spirit. Very contemplative and atmospheric, this two-disc set may be the perfect backdrop for meditation practices.
