Review

The Source (3/98, p.188) - 3 Mics (out of 5) - "...MY MELODY...consists of a fair share of material that spotlights early '80s pop hits integrated into a plethora of old school hip-hop drum beats..."

Title Note

Personnel: Queen Pen (vocals); Teddy Riley (vocals, rap vocals, various instruments); Markell Riley, Mr. Cheeks, Nutta Butta (rap vocals); K. Coleman, Knobody, Will Stewart (various instruments); Serban Ghenea (bass); C. Hannibal (background vocals); Me'Shell Ndegeocello, Phil Collins, Eric Williams, Richard Stites, Ronald Isley.

Producers: Teddy Riley, Knobody, Will "Skylz" Stewart.

Recorded at Future Recording Studios, Virginia Beach, Virginia.

The success of sultry female rappers such as Lil' Kim and Foxy Brown spawned the emergence of a number of other fashion-conscious rap divas. However, crew affiliation was often the deciding factor in the making or breaking of their career, so with the Notorious B.I.G. behind the scenes of Lil' Kim's project and Jay-Z adding lyrical contributions to Foxy Brown's debut album, it was no surprise that those two would rise above the rest. Queen Pen, who was introduced to hip-hop fans through her guest appearance on the Blackstreet hit "No Diggity," is the first contender to be entered in the running with the likes of Kim and Foxy. Could it have something to do with the production talents of Teddy Riley?

While it doesn't hurt to have a skilled producer on board, this is clearly Queen Pen's show. MY MELODY combines Queen Pen's vocal strength with her own brand of modernized R&B. "Party Ain't A Party," which features Mr. Cheeks of the Lost Boyz, shows Queen Pen's potential in the clubs, while tracks like "All My Love" give her a chance to display her storytelling capabilities.
