Title Note

For MY MAUDLIN CAREER, its first full-length album for the 4AD label, the Scottish indie-pop act Camera Obscura presents another set of lovelorn tunes. Led by singer/guitarist Tracyanne Campbell, who deftly mixes cool detachment and simmering emotion, the Glasgow-based ensemble still sits on the more melancholy side of Belle & Sebastian's twee, retro-minded aesthetic, but it uses this quality as a virtue rather than a hindrance (see the drifting, slighty twangy songs "Away with Murder" and "Forests and Sands"). Campbell and company also charm on the breezy pop numbers such as "French Navy" and "Swans," sometimes evoking a less narcoleptic Mazzy Star.
