Review

"...full of charming theatrical anecdotes delivered both by and to Coward, all written (with Barry Day) in an appropriately breezy style."

Publisher's note

Other men made fabulous careers out of the opportunities Noel Coward declined. But Coward's inner compass charted him on his own course to greatness. And when he couldn't find the destination on his maps, he invented Samolo, his own South Sea island complete with its own indigenous rituals and customs. And of course, we revisit Coward's worlds constantly in revivals of his classic plays, Hay Fever, Private Lives, Tonight at 8:30, Design for Living and Blithe Spirit. This is the definitive memoir of the private Noel Coward by the only man with the compassionate insight and first-hand experience to write it. Graham Payn, star of many of Coward's shows, shared the Master's professional and private life for thirty years. When Coward kept the rest of the world at bay, Payn remained at his side as confidant and friend. No one else was as privy to Coward's doubts and dreams.

Annotation

Graham Payn recounts his experiences with the great 20th-century playwright and songwriter in MY LIFE WITH NOEL COWARD, a colorful and engrossing memoir of their four-decade relationship. Payn first appears as a somewhat desperate young man auditioning for Coward by simultaneously singing "Nearer My God to Thee" and tap dancing; surprisingly, Coward spots his talent and hires him. Thus Payn is inducted into a world peopled by characters with names like Podgie and Binnie. Bright young things, gay in both the Thirties and Seventies senses of the word, they're also strikingly nanve, as is revealed by their attendance at the 1936 Berlin Olympics and oblivious tour of what's later revealed to be a Nazi submarine base. While Payn's book discloses little about Coward's inner workings, it includes a revealing series of notes on the master's attitudes to Method acting, theatre audiences, and playing comedy, as well as providing a valuable insight into his working methods. Payn also includes a variety of Coward's articles and a captivating early '60s conversation between the playwright and Judy Garland. MY LIFE WITH NOEL COWARD is a fascinating series of recollections for any student of the theatre, and for Noel Coward enthusiasts in particular.
