New Years Day's full-length debut, released on TVT in early 2007, showcases the band's appealing synthesis of hard-rock muscle, pop-punk hooks, emo expressiveness, and radio-ready accessibility. "Ready Aim Misfire," for example, a caustic warning to a wayward cupid, is powered by stadium-sized guitars and a soaring chorus. The same is true of the title track. Lead singer Ash mixes sugar and venom into her delivery, and the band has obviously weaned itself on technically oriented metal in order to provide a crisp, thunderous backdrop. MY DEAR is a promising salvo from the California quintet, and comes recommended to fans of Taking Back Sunday and My Chemical Romance.
