Guitars, violin, and sometimes accordion are integral to the arrangements, as are buoyant harmonies. Music of New Mexico: Hispanic Traditions is a good sampler of the folk styles that persist in the area after several hundred years. But more than that, it's actually something you would consider playing for pleasure once in a while, which is not something you can say about quite a few folkloric projects of this sort, whether by Smithsonian Folkways or other labels. The lilting harmony-laden guitar ballads are highlights, but there's a lot of diversity on the 73-minute disc, from a cappella and solo flute to full-band dance tunes.
