Jai Uttal is a Grammy-nominated musician whose eclectic fusion of eastern music with western sensibilities has made him a star in the world music scene. On MUSIC FOR YOGA AND OTHER JOYS, Uttal, with the assistance of multi-instrumentalist Ben Leinbach, has recorded his first album of music created especially for yoga practice. Clocking in at 75 minutes, the music takes the listener from the calming opening chant on "Govinda" to the steady, upbeat "Nataraja," and culminates in the soothing "Surya." The entire recording is a sensual, passionate experience that is perfect for the spiritual aspects of yoga. Uttal's warm, resonant voice is a soaring gift that connects directly to the heart of the listener. His joy and devotion are readily apparent and shine through the rich, complex blend of contemporary Western and authentic Indian instruments. The dotar, slide tambora, and bansuri are only a few of the instruments on which Leinbach performs expertly. While this recording maybe intended for yoga, it is really ideal for any calm, relaxing activity.
