Review

"Buruma tells the story of the main protagonists of this unhappy tale, delving into the pasts of van Gogh, Hirsi Ali, Mohammed Bouyeri and the politician Pim Fortuyn to craft a narrative so pacy it has you wondering whether you are reading a Frederick Forsyth thriller."

'[A] shrewd, subtly argued inquiry into the tensions and resentments underlying two of the most shocking events in the recent history of the Netherlands....There is no single answer, [Buruma] discovers, as he sits down with social workers, historians, politicians and writers, some Dutch, others immigrants or the children of immigrants. There are, however, promising avenues to explore, and this he does, economically and suggestively."

"A better book about the contemporary Netherlands has not been written....[Buruma's] most interesting contribution here is to provide a more comprehensible vision of Bouyeri [who] comes across as all too understandable a character, far from the merciless butcher depicted in the press."

"A troubling description and analysis of what can happen when cultures collide."

"Buruma's greatest virtue is that he understands the ways in which site-specific tensions in Holland tie into larger historical currents, and he is as good at describing those currents...as he is at picking out details...that drive his arguments home."

Synopsis

On a cold November day in Amsterdam, an angry young Muslim man, the son of Moroccan immigrants, killed celebrated and controversial Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh, great-grandnephew of Vincent and iconic European provocateur, for making a movie that "blasphemed" Islam. The murder horrified quiet, complacent, prosperous Holland, a country that prides itself on being a bastion of tolerance, and sent shock waves across Europe and around the world. Ian Buruma returned to his native Netherlands to try to make sense of it all and to see what larger meaning should and shouldn't be drawn from this story. The result is a true-crime page-turner with the intellectual resonance we've come to expect from this well-regarded journalist and thinker: the exemplary tale of our age, the story of what happens when political Islam collides with the secular West and tolerance finds its limits.--From publisher description.

Annotation

Essayist Ian Buruma journeys back to his home in the Netherlands to investigate the 2004 politically charged murder of filmmaker Theo van Gogh by militant Mohammed Bouyeri, who felt that van Gogh's film SUBMISSION had insulted Islam. Buruma explores life in the immigrant communities, seeing discontent, isolation, and hopelessness, especially among its youth. Among the Dutch citizens, for whom tolerance was a cherished ideal, he discerns a sense of fear that their way of life is threatened. Buruma questions what the future will bring for these two groups and for the country they now inhabit but do not share.
