Mudcrutch – Mudcrutch
Almost 40 years ago, back in the early 1970s, Mudcrutch was derived from Tom Petty’s first band, The Sundowners. This ‘new’ band was composed of Tom Petty (bass and vocals), Tom Leadon (guitar and vocals), Randall Marsh (drums) and Mike Campbell (guitar). At the time, Mudcrutch served as the house band at Dub's Diner in its hometown of Gainesville, Florida. Unfortunately, the band dissolved in 1975 having not seen much success.
Fast-forward to August 2007, add keyboardist Benmont Tench, and you’ve got the modern day version of Mudcrutch, finally, reunited once again.
Their April 29th, 2008 self-titled release marks the band’s first studio album on the Reprise Records label. With 14 new and old tracks, Mudcrutch defines the term ‘complete album’.
Influences of folklore, rock and roll, country, and bluegrass can clearly be heard throughout the entire album. Petty and the band slip seamlessly between tracks and juxtapose upbeat (“Six Days on the Road”) and mellow (“Crystal River”) songs effortlessly.
Mudcrutch sounds like an album created amongst good, old friends; an idea that permeates through the music and the overall quality of the album.
"We would play and then we would just talk about the old days" - Tom Leadon
