When Sergei Prokofiev returned to Russia after a decade in America and France he embarked on an evening-length four act ballet in the grand Russian tradition. 'Romeo and Juliet' had tough going at first, with dance companies reneging on performance agreements and dancers complaining about the music, so Prokofiev arranged several short concert suites to make sure the music reached the public. And reach it did: in this form 'Romeo and Juliet' became one of his most popular works. Several conductors have assembled their own suites in order to present more of the music and restore some of the ballet's narrative flow.

For his debut San Francisco Symphony disk Michael Tilson Thomas has fashioned his own suite with a few structural twists and about as much music as a CD will allow. It's an extrovert's performance, one that stresses instrumental brilliance over atmosphere, favoring fast tempos in the dances of revelry and conflict, and refusing to linger even in the love scenes. RCA puts the Red Seal on their first official visit to Davies Symphony Hall with a recording that is direct and impactful, just like the performance.
