Product Notes

Mozart's G major piano concerto may not be the composer's most famous work, but it holds a special place in musicians' hearts for its deeply searching slow movement and the jovial finale, a set of variations on a theme composed by Mozart's pet starling! Leonard Bernstein once declared this concerto to be his favorite piece of music, and this performance, recorded live at Vienna's Grosser Musikvereinssaal on October 3, 1981, turned out to be his last recorded appearance as a concerto soloist. On the 11th of that same month in the same venue Bernstein conducted this performance of the sublime 39th Symphony in E flat. Bernstein had conducted very little Mozart since he left the New York Philharmonic in 1969, and his Mozart recordings with that ensemble were generally derided by the critics as being heavy-handed and unidiomatic. These performances were the first in a series of recordings Bernstein undertook in the final decade of his life that succeeded in redeeming his reputation as a Mozartian, earning praise for their unexpected energy, lightness of touch, and autumnal glow.
