Relaxation, meditation, inspiration, elucidation...call it what you like, but for two centuries the graceful symmetries of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's music have guided listeners to some kind of inner peace, the same mental state, one might fantasize, that Mozart was seeking when he wrote the music. In the film 'Amadeus' several movements are used strikingly to illustrate this benevolence and two of them, the Andantino from the Flute and Harp Concerto and the Adagio from the B flat Major Serenade, are to be found on this disc.
The selection is generous and varied, with entire movements from nine major works, solo, chamber and orchestral, and a trio from 'Cos fan tutte' added for more than good measure. This wouldn't mean much if the performers weren't good, but BMG provides a great roster, featuring flutist James Galway, clarinetist Richard Stolzman and pianist Alicia de Larrocha, along with the Tokyo String Quartet and several top orchestras. So whether or not you intend to relax it's a good listen all the way.
