Rolling Stone (p.90) - "MOUNTAINS is pure super-rock, the triple-percussion assault pushing Zorn's horn and Marc Ribot's burnt-Hendrix, tortured-Sabbath guitar to the edge of sanity."
Electric Masada: Marc Ribot (guitar); John Zorn (alto saxophone); Jamie Saft (keyboards); Trevor Dunn (bass instrument); Kenny Wollesen, Joey Baron (drums); Cyro Baptista (percussion); Ikue Mori (electronics, laptop).
Recording information: 2004.
An immensely powerful and sometimes breathtakingly lyrical confluence of free jazz and electronic music, Electric Masada is a galvanized version of New York musician and Tzadik label proprietor John Zorn's ongoing Masada project. Begun in the early 1990s, Masada is an experimental integration of traditional Jewish music and culture with modern and avant-garde musical forms. Including longtime collaborators Ikue Mori, Joey Baron, and Cyro Baptista, Electric Masada also features guitarist Marc Ribot, who contributes to many of the album's more fiery moments, including the searing "Metal Tov" and "Tekufah."
