As befitting a child of a mountain preacher, Ralph Stanley has a long tradition of answering every secular record he makes with a gospel one, insuring that he never strays far from the flock. MOUNTAIN PREACHER'S CHILD collects gospel tracks that Stanley recorded from the mid '70s to the mid '80s, all available on CD for the first time.

Listeners expecting a more ruminative and somber approach like that of his 2002 secular record, RALPH STANLEY, which featured only Stanley's legendarily forlorn voice over banjo, will be surprised. MOUNTAIN PREACHER'S CHILD is rollicking social music that has the energy and drive of a secular dance party. Most of the tracks are group romps that feature the fiddle of Curley Ray Cline, Junior Blankenship's frenetic mandolin picking, and some great old-time group harmony. The material speaks for itself: "The Keys To The Kingdom," "Troublesome Waters," "Oak Grove Church," and "Go Down Moses" are clearly spirituals at the core, but faith music has never sounded quite so loose and fun.
