Review

Rolling Stone (p.71) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he new rhythm section swerves and stomps harder than ever, making a racket worthy of Wennerstrom's voice -- a veritable mountain of sound."
Entertainment Weekly (p.57) - "[The album] opens with its title track, an epic slab of country-grunge that beautifully showcases the soulful, weathered vocals of frontwoman Erika Wennerstrom." -- Grade: B+
Alternative Press (p.121) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "THE MOUNTAIN brings a new rhythm section to town -- a rejuvenating transfusion for the band -- and Appalachian banjo and high-art violin swirls."
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.52) - "At times THE MOUNTAIN is bleak, at times it's uplifting....In Wennerstrom's deep and brooding voice, there remains something enigmatic."
Blender (Magazine) (p.62) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "THE MOUNTAIN is as fierce as any past Bastards recording, just more honed and hellbound."
Paste (magazine) (p.57) - "THE MOUNTAIN sounds best when the Bastards explore unlikelier textures, like the sinister acoustic jangle of 'Be So Happy' or the banjo-spiked ramble of 'Had To Go.'"

Title Note

Ohio-based trio Heartless Bastards garnered enough acclaim for their first two albums to put their third, THE MOUNTAIN, in the "highly anticipated" category. Fortunately, the band didn't make any hasty changes to their sound here, which seems to have developed very organically from the earlier recordings. The arrangements remain raw, spare, and largely subdued, with Erika Wennerstrom's distinctive Patti Smith-meets-Dusty Springfield vocals the dominant force on tracks that seem equally conversant with Detroit garage-punk, deep soul, and American roots music.
