Review

Rolling Stone (p.73) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "At 50 minutes, MOTION TO REJOIN's jams drift off into the ether, but that's their whole charm: Surrender to the flow, and you'll never know where the time went."
Spin (p.102) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "The minimal, murkily hypnotic, Fender Rhodes-heavy groove of 2006's self titled breakthrough gives way to more discernible melodies and socially conscious lyrics, buoyed by soulful horns and backup vocals."
The Wire (p.56) - "'Past A Weatherbeaten Fencepost' comes complete with faux-vinyl crackle -- but long before then the Southern eco-hippy voodoo will have you hooked and supine, and all other music will sound absurdly hectic."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.104) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t's fascinating music...extremely psychedelic, with gospelly backing singers, flutes and guitars reaching the listener through a reverb-heavy haze."
Blender (Magazine) (pp.78-79) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[G]orgeously narcotic. Skinny-dipped in reverb, Rachael Hughes and Nathan Shineywater sing-sigh over a psychedelic version of '70s soul, full of gently loping electric keyboards and cloudy horn charts."

Title Note

On their self-titled debut for Matador Records, Brightblack Morning Light offered an American roots-infused take on My Bloody Valentine's warm drones, cutting through the maelstrom with touches of gospel, country, and soul. On MOTION TO REJOIN, the New Mexico-via-Alabama duo of Rachael Hughes and Nathan Shineywater continue to gaze not at their shoes, but rather at the star-flecked big sky that hangs over the American landscape. "Hologram Buffalo" and "Oppressions Each" sound like codeine-soaked Stax ballads heard from beyond the next mesa, while "Summer Hoof" is arguably the one and only ambient soul-jazz jam ever recorded. The duo owe an undeniable debt to Spiritualized, yet Brightblack Morning Light also dig through the dirt to get at the original source.
