Personnel: Steve Kuhn (piano); Harvie Swartz (acoustic bass).

During the 1980s, pianist Steve Kuhn collaborated with singer Sheila Jordan on a number of well-regarded albums for the ECM label. Also at about that time he recorded this atypical set of standards, but it didn't see the light of day for another 10 years. It's a beautiful performance all around. There's a reason even a modernist like Kuhn returns to this classic material, in much the way a classical musician sooner or later returns to Bach. Like the similar Paul Bley, Kuhn has an usual abstract approach that lends these straightfoward interpretations a certain grandeur, though there's a lot of warmth here as well. Highlights: Leonard Bernstein's "Lonely Town" and Henry Mancini's underheard "Two For the Road."
