CD Buyer's Guide - Highly Recommended

Original scores composed and conducted by Ennio Morricone.

FILM MUSIC VOLUME 1 pays scant attention to the composer's spare, tensely atmospheric scores for Italian director Sergio Leone's "Spaghetti Westerns," including only the title tracks from THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY and ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST. The set is therefore not exactly representative, since it omits most of the pieces for which Morricone is most famous.

Nevertheless, FILM MUSIC VOLUME 1 is a splendid introduction, insofar as it gives a sampling of Morricone's broad and inventive compositional palette. Among the familiar themes are more obscure pieces, such as the beautiful, evocative "The Sicilian Clan" and "Sacco & Vanzetti." In all, this collection is a worthy tribute to the composer's genius.
