Review

Dirty Linen (8-9/99, pp.68-9) - "...amazingly vital....the album has all the ingredients of great rock'n'roll: spirited singing, torrid guitar leads, an excellent rhythm section, and a tongue-in-cheek attitude that never lapses into parody..."

Title Note

Personnel: Ronnie Dawson (vocals, acoustic, electric & low-tune guitars); Mike Molnar (acoustic & electric guitars); Matt Robbins (electric guitar); Jason Eckhardt (mandolin, background vocals); Pip (fiddle); P. Rumbaugh (acoustic bass); John Palmer (drums, percussion); Kris Eckhardt, Elizabeth Szatkowski, Isabelle Eckhardt-Szatkowski, Marc Mencher, Melissa Mencher, Julie Sawtelle, Susan Robbins (background vocals).

Recorded at the Track Farm, Cape Elizabeth, Maine.

Ronnie Dawson makes good-time music of the most irresistible variety. A rockabilly king who sounds like he's been accidentally transplanted from the Sun Records vaults of the '50s, Dawson churns out country-tinged rock & roll songs about the immutable truths: partying, girls, cars, drinking, smoking, and good music. With classic tunes bolstered by memorable choruses, hooky bridges and wiry electric guitar leads, Dawson comes across as the spirit of traditional rock & roll itself. Such songs as "Toe Up From The Flo Up," "Waxahachie Drag Race," "Barbwire Betty," and "Mac Attack" (yes, it's a song about eating hamburgers) show Dawson to be both humorously self-effacing in his lyrics and approach and serious enough to rip off a killer guitar lead. He pulls off this tricky balance with infectious energy and charisma. MORE BAD HABITS helps remind us why rock & roll was invented in the first place.

Album Review

More Bad Habits marks Dawson's first studio album in a few years and his first ever in stereo. Recorded in Portland, ME, the album also represents Dawson's first studio recording in the US since the 1960's. Fans of Dawson's music and first-time listeners alike will be blown away by the powerful sound created on this righteous album. With this remarkable new album on the way and tons of national touring planned, 1999 promises to be a landmark year for the Blonde Bomber who will celebrate his 60th birthday on August 11th. Since Dawson's modest beginnings during the pioneer days of rock 'n roll, he has been an ongoing presence in the music scene and has experienced a resurgence of interest over the last several years. Dawson believes that More Bad Habits is his strongest, rockin'est effort to date. It's been said that every new year should be better than the previous one. I've always said this about recordings. My fans will always get my best effort and More Bad Habits, I feel, is the best so far.
