Review

"Tony Fletcher recounts nearly 600 pages of anecdotes, some hilarious, some deeply sad and disturbing. Unfortunately, he does not get to the nub of the issue: what was the engine driving Keith Moon's gleeful madness?"

"In this fascinating bio, Fletcher--a lively storyteller with a keen ear for music--reveals Moon to be a master prankster and brilliant drummer, a deeply troubled but lovable musician whose talents and personality were as central to the Who's genius as Pete Townshend's."

Publisher's note

Keith Moon was the bad boy of rock & roll, the most manic member of an aggressive and fabulously successful band, a full-throttle hedonist who lived at the center of an unending party. He was also a musical genius who inspired whole generations of artists, a generous friend to nearly everyone who crossed his path, a guileless man of immense personal charm to whom the sweetest sound on earth was surf music.A generation after his death, Moon is still revered as the greatest drummer in rock history and the single wildest personality in an age of pop excess. Here is the truth behind the legend, the result of more than three years of research in which music journalist Tony Fletcher interviewed dozens of Moon's friends, colleagues, and associates. The result is an instant classic that brilliantly illuminates both the tender and self-destructive sides of this singular personality. This is the story of one of the most outrageous rock stars ever born -- and Moon is one of the greatest rock biographies ever written.

Annotation

Tony Fletcher's biography of the man who typified the image of the drummer as wild man and the rock star as hotel-room-trashing hedonist is a surprisingly nuanced look at a personality that seemed outwardly to display few subtleties. But Moon's outsized image hid a multiplicity of neuroses that may have been symptomatic of real psychological illness; his attempts at self-medication were ultimately to prove fatal. Fletcher's examination of the volatile drummer's roots turns up a surprisingly stable and happy childhood, while Moon's partnership with the Who seems to have been the perfect pairing of like minds. However, a punishing work schedule and copious drug and alcohol use led to a growing reputation as one of rock's most reliable wild men, to increasing bouts of paranoia (Moon at one point insists that the band has replaced him with another drummer on, appropriately enough, "Substitute"), and occasional violence. Fletcher doesn't attempt to divorce Moon's mental instability from his art, showing that it could also lead to occasional brilliance; his descriptions of the drummer's contributions to the Who's music form many of the book's highlights.
