Monifah, who sang in Off-Broadway shows as a child and later toured as a backup singer for reggae crooner Maxi Priest, is a true diva. On MOODS...MOMENTS, her debut album, she flaunts her amazing vocal talents without resorting to tactics or gimmicks. She does show off great emotional range, though. "You" and "Don't Waste My Time" illustrate a brash confidence; "It's Alright" displays a much softer side.

When Monifah's smooth voice is turned over to the production hands of hip-hop-gone-R&B maven Heavy D (he produced or co-produced more than half of the album), the result is pure soul music. Monifah's success seems inevitable.
