This CD is from the fourth of an eight-night series of concerts devoted to the music of Charlie Haden, presented by the Montreal Jazz Festival in 1989. Here he is in the company of pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba and drummer Paul Motian (who can also be heard on Haden's MONTREAL TAPES WITH GERI ALLEN AND PAUL MOTIAN). Half of the six pieces were composed by Haden and the other three are Gary Peacock's "Vignette," Ornette Coleman's "The Blessing," and Miles Davis's "Solar."
The centerpiece of the set is Haden's "La Pasionaria," nearly 15 minutes of gorgeous, South America-inflected melodic interplay. Throughout the entire album, Rubalcaba's swiftly running forays mix prodigious chops with a palpable emotional bearing. Motian's several drum solos are dazzlingly ferocious. The concert was superbly recorded, with every detail of the interplay of these three well-matched players audible and resonant.
