Title Note

With the resounding success of 'Orfeo' in 1607, Claudio Monteverdi's fame as a composer of secular music was on the rise. Little good did this do his desire to assume the recently vacated position of chapel master at the Palatine basilica of Santa Barbara in the Gonzaga court. Most historians now agree that Monteverdi composed the spectacular compendium of sacred music in old and new styles, his 'Vespro della Beata Vergine' of 1610, in order to display his sacred music wares. Monteverdi's dedicating the 'Vespro' to the Pope and publishing it in Venice were wisely strategic, for when the Duke passed over Monteverdi for the chapel master position, he was soon offered the equivalent position at St. Mark's in Venice, where he spent the rest of his life.

The renowned Taverner Consort gives this wide-ranging music an elegant and passionate performance. They are graced with the flexibility to embrace what would be, for most ensembles, a dauntingly varied array of musical styles. Their choice to round out this recording with six selections from 'Selva morale e spirituale' of 1641 is most apt, for as Monteverdi's Venetian swan song, they represent the pinnacle of both madrigal composition and Monteverdi's art.
