With 2007's THE MODERN TRIBE, the Baltimore-based indie-rock trio Celebration builds on its bold, post-punk-influenced 4AD debut. Produced by TV on the Radio's David Sitek, the album features other members of that lauded NYC act on various tracks, but the real draw of the record is singer Katrina Ford's powerful voice, which often recalls a more soul-inclined Siouxsie Sioux, particularly on the thrillingly percussive opener, "Evergreen." Evidence of an inventive ensemble hitting its stride, THE MODERN TRIBE is one of the finest left-field surprises of the year.
