Review

Living Blues (9-10/01, p.80) - "...Reminiscent of Ike & Tina Turner...these are churning scorchers ignited by saucy vocals..."

Title Note

Personnel: Inez Foxx, Charlie Foxx (vocals).

Liner Note Author: Mark Marymont.

This covers the period (probably about 1963-1966, although dates are not given for all the tracks in the liner notes) in which Inez and Charles Foxx were on Symbol Records, a subsidiary of Sue. The original hit version of "Mockingbird" leads off the 14-song disc, and it's simply a great early pop-soul song with irresistible vocal sparring between the sister and brother. Of course, nothing else on the CD matches that classic, although "Hurt by Love" was a moderate hit for them in 1964 on both sides of the Atlantic. This is average pop-soul of the era, albeit more R&B-oriented than many records in the genre. Sometimes they sounded like Ike & Tina Turner (who were themselves pretty spotty on record during the period). At other times, they tried to mimic the Supremes ("La De Dah I Love You"), or just tried to rework the "Mockingbird" sound, with predictably lesser results. Any compilation worthy of the name The Best of Charlie & Inez Foxx needs to incorporate some of their 1966-1968 material for Musicor, which is collected on the Charly anthology Count the Days. It also needs to have better packaging than it gets on the no-frills sleeve that Collectables gave this release. ~ Richie Unterberger
