Allison Moorer Artist Snapshot:

Like big sister Shelby Lynne, Allison Moorer deals in a brand of country that pays heed to a rich history of music from Nashville and beyond, while forging her own patent voice. Moorer's impassioned, gin-soaked vocals hit a haunting note on her 1998 debut single, "A Soft Place to Fall," a minor country hit that led into the critically lauded ALABAMA SONG. A frequent collaborator with husband Steve Earle, Moorer gained a wider audience as the original duet partner on Kid Rock's "Picture." Her 2008 album, MOCKINGBIRD, an impressively diverse collection of covers, elegantly illustrated the breadth of her talent.

Review

Spin (p.106) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Miller pares down the arrangements and Moorer relaxes, allowing her dark, sultry voice to simmer."
Uncut (p.98) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he straight country of Jessi Colter's 'I'm Looking For Blue Eyes' suits her best..."
No Depression (p.72) - "[I]t's the country song, in the end, that Moorer keeps for her own....It sounds here like a new beginning, a fresh way forward."
Harp (magazine) (p.92) - "Drawing material from the distaff side of country, blues, rock, and folk, in almost every case Moorer manages to bring something to the song while serving the spirit of the original."

Title Note

Much like her older sister Shelby Lynne did with JUST A LITTLE LOVIN', renegade country singer Alison Moorer starts 2008 with an album of covers. But where Lynne's album was dedicated to the late Dusty Springfield, MOCKINGBIRD is an eclectic mix that includes 12 songs written by or popularized by women who inspired Moorer (including herself--she penned the album's sole original, the title track). MOCKINGBIRD is a widely varied collection of songs ranging from a slinky version of the old bawdy blues "I Need A Little Sugar In My Bowl" to an impassioned take on Patti Smith's punk-era classic, "Dancing Barefoot," and a heartfelt recasting of the June Carter Cash-penned "Ring of Fire."
