Lotek Hi-Fi's energized mixture of basement-style hip-hop production, deep reggae-derived rhythms, and underground rapping sensibilities comes across as fresh and vital. Riding the wave of Britain's grime movement (which has exported such talents as M.I.A., Dizzy Rascal, and the Streets), Lotek Hi-Fi refine their unique hybrid on their second release, MIXED BLESSINGS. Unlike their grime contemporaries, however, Lotek Hi-Fi are deeply tied to Jamaican traditions, with threads of dub, roots, and dancehall figuring prominently into the mix.

There are several noteworthy personalities in the crew, including MCs Wayne Paul, Aurelius, and Lotek, not to mention producer Wayne Bennet, whose spooky, stripped-down tracks are at once heady and raw. The resulting effort is wonderfully atmospheric and not too in-your-face (a rarity in hip-hop), yet is still vital and provocative, earmarking Lotel Hi-Fi as a crew to watch.
