First line

The kids in Room 207 were misbehaving again.
Spitballs stuck to the ceiling.
Paper planes whizzed through the air.
They were the worst-behaved class in the whole school.

Publisher's note

The kids in Room 207 take advantage of their teacher's good nature until she disappears and they are faced with a substitute. "Rarely has the golden rule been so effectively interpreted for children." -- Booklist

Annotation

The rowdy kids in Miss Nelson's class spend their school days throwing spitballs, giggling, and refusing to do their assignments--basically taking full advantage of their teacher's easygoing nature. But then, one day, Miss Nelson is absent, and in her place is a substitute teacher: Miss Viola Swamp. The kids plan to use this opportunity to really cut loose, but, unfortunately for them, Miss Swamp is as mean as Miss Nelson was permissive. Gone are Miss Nelson's pleasant smile and story times, now replaced with Miss Swamp's dark scowl and enormous homework assignments. Desperate for the return of the now very-much-appreciated Miss Nelson, the kids of Room 207 even go so far as to hire a detective to search for their missing teacher. Will Miss Nelson return and, if she does, will her students finally behave? Watercolor and pen-and-ink illustrations (which are full of visual tributes to the illustrator's home state of Texas) accompany the text.
