Edwin McCain is a practitioner of the same brand of middle American-sounding Cinemascope folk-rock as Hootie & The Blowfish. Big, bold arrangements leap out of the speakers, hard-hitting drums are mated with ringing acoustic guitars and lap steel. An interesting addition to the mix is saxophonist Craig Shields, who adds some unexpected instrumental shadings to the proceedings. Much of McCain's lyrical focus is on introspection, bittersweet nostalgia and the occasional idyllic observation of the world around him. Each tune on MISGUIDED ROSES reinforces the proletarian musical vision McCain seems to be striving for, instantly accessible, but never pandering.
