Bobby Hecksher's neo-psychedelic outfit the Warlocks have been refining their dense, distortion-heavy forays into space rock territory since the early 2000s, and 2009's THE MIRROR EXPLODES shows the fruits of that labor. Slow and sludgy, yet simultaneously high-minded and expansive, THE MIRROR EXPLODES compiles the collective influence of the Velvet Underground, Spiritualized, and Mercury Rev into something new and entrancing.

Based primarily around dark drones, the tunes on the band's sixth album feature spiraling guitars, thunderous drumming, plaintive vocals, and a universe of effects-drenched sonics. The mood is predominantly melancholic, and even when the tempos rise above a plodding surge, as on the thumping "Frequency Meltdown," the overall feeling is still that of having your soul severed from your body by wailing, razory electric guitar lines.
