As the title (perhaps inspired by the DeNiro film of the previous year) suggests, "Midnight Run" has a decidedly late-night feel to it. It's full of the sort of '60s Southern soul and blues songs you might hear in a smoky dive where the musicians are playing more for themselves than for the audience. The material is strong, and Bland's phrasing is more magisterial than ever, particularly on "Keep It a Secret," a sad cheating song in much the same vein as James Carr's "Dark End of the Street," as well as on an excellent cover of Bill Wither's "Ain't No Sunshine," and the concluding, gospelish, "Starting All Over Again."
