Review

Living Blues (p.44) - "Calling upon his well-honed repertoire and inviting a few of Slim's friends and admirers on board, MIDNIGHT BLUES is equal parts Magic Slim house party and all-star jam. Together it is one fine, raucous affair."

Title Note

Personnel: Magic Slim, Jon McDonald (vocals, guitar); Elvin Bishop, Lonnie Brooks (guitar); James Cotton (harmonica); Danny O'Connor (bass guitar, background vocals); David Simms (drums); Otis Clay (background vocals).

Like many great bluesmen, Magic Slim came to Chicago from Mississippi in the 1950s to make the scene. However, his recording career didn't really take off until the late '70s. By the 2000s, though, he'd become an elder statesman, and MIDNIGHT BLUES shows him to be a true standard-bearer of the traditional Chicago blues sound. The roadhouse grooves, gritty guitar riffs, and throaty soulful vocals that are second nature to Slim might sound like tropes coming from a less-pedigreed personage, but Slim's got the wherewithal to make it all come alive again, anytime he wants.
