Mice Parade Artist Snapshot:

Mice Parade is both an anagram and a solo project of Adam Pierce, the founder of the popular post-rock label Bubble Core and occasional member of the Icelandic band Mum and dub outfit HiM. A drummer and percussionist, Pierce is particularly adept at creating mesmerizing beats and patterns over which he layers delicate strips of melody, often played on non-obvious instruments such as harp and marimba, as well as guitar, violin, and electric piano. He often employs guest vocalists to round out the songs. Pierce has been releasing albums as Mice Parade since the late 1990s.

Review

Uncut (p.103) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[E]legantly turned folktronica....Frequently recorded in single takes, the better to preserve their quiet volatility."
Magnet (p.100) - "The real surprise here is 'Circle None,' a lovely guitar instrumental that comes off like a missing link between Michael Hedges and Tortoise."
The Wire (p.55) - "PIerce's dry yearning vocals express just enough vulnerability to offset the music's pop sophistication."
CMJ (p.45) - "The drums are muffled....This allows the instrumentation and vocals to shine through..."

Title Note

Bubble Core founder (and sometimes member of Mum and HiM) Adam Pierce is a drummer, and it's not surprising that the tracks he creates as Mice Parade seem to grow organically from a beat nexus. The exhilarating 7/4 swirl of "Sneaky Red," the polyrhythms of "Satchelaise," the Flamenco flavor of "Double Dolphins On The Nickel," and the mesmerizing backbeat of "Tales Of Las Negras" all signal a songwriter who cares about pulse and feel. Layers of undistorted electric guitar tracks and some well-placed vocals (with guest singers Kristin Anna Valtysdottir from Mum and Stereolab's Laetitia Sadier) round out the sound, making for an engaging, personal, and very satisfying album.
