Review

Q (11/94, p.148) - 3 Stars - Good - "...the missing link between The Move and the Electric Light Orchestra/Wizzard projects that Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood were about to mastermind...feisty, gritty, and melodious at heart..."
Uncut (p.127) - 5 stars out of 5 - "One listen to this '71 masterpiece, replete with nine extra tracks, shows us where the strand of power-pop chased down by the likes of Cheap Trick was born."
Magnet (p.91) - "Guitarist Roy Wood had a knack for crafting mod-pop tunes with a sarcastic lyrical bite."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.136) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Fans love this Roy Wood/Jeff Lynne summit..."

Title Note

The Move: Jeff Lynne, Roy Wood, Bev Bevan.

The Move: Roy Wood (vocals, guitar, steel guitar, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, bass guitar); Jeff Lynne (vocals, guitar, piano, electric piano, percussion); Bev Bevan (drums, percussion).

At the time that Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne were recording this album, most of their artistic energy was going into the creation of the Electric Light Orchestra. Wood's 'It Wasn't My Idea To Dance' has the same dissonance that characterized the first ELO album, and, with a little cello, could easily pass as a track from that record. The pop sensibility that shone through the Move's early work was still there, but the group was losing its artistic focus, although as a performing unit it was at its peak. When they set their sights on a specific goal, such as 'The Minister', with its 'Paperback Writer' feel, or the title track, with its Beach Boys a cappella coda, the results were magical.
