George Jones Artist Snapshot:

George Jones is the greatest of country singers but he has also been a victim of the infamous hard-living honky-tonk lifestyle. Though he's gone through several phases, from rockabilly to honky-tonk to countrypolitan, his melismatic, Lefty Frizell-influenced style has remained at the core of his unique sound. His stormy marriage to Tammy Wynette (1969-75) included duet albums of love songs and bitter recriminations. By the late '70s, his drinking and cocaine addiction had made him so unreliable that he was known as "No Show Jones." In 1979 he received medical treatment and staged a significant comeback with I AM WHAT I AM, which included his greatest single, "He Stopped Loving Her Today."

Title Note

2 LPs on 1 CD: MEMORIES OF US (1975)/THE BATTLE (1975).

Appearing as they did hot on the heels of George Jones' and Tammy Wynette's divorce, both THE BATTLE and MEMORIES OF US (two mid-'70s albums now available on a single Koch CD) have often been characterized as George Jones' "divorce albums." Of course, tales of heartbreak and failed romance have never been foreign to George Jones' music, nor have the emotive vocals that seem to emanate from the bottom of the singer's soul. Regardless, BATTLE and MEMORIES remain two of Jones' finest efforts of this era.

Both albums find Jones at his most introspective, especially on "You Always Look Your Best (Here In My Arms)," "Love Coming Down," and the Wynette/Jones-penned " She Should Belong To Me." A few humorous, uptempo numbers are here as well, serving primarily to counterbalance the gravity of the albums' many ballads. The mood of this disc is best summed up, however, by the albums' two hits (the title songs) and MEMORIES' closing track, an aching Jones original of post-breakup despair entitled "I Just Don't Give a Damn."
