MEMORIES, CHRONICLES & DECLARATIONS won the 2001 Latin Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Pop Album. "Amor I Love You" was nominated for the 2001 Latin Grammy for Best Brazilian Song.

Marisa Monte, a star in her native Brazil, is of the generation of performers who carry on the tradition of classic samba and bossa nova while absorbing the sounds of pop and rock music from around the world. The production by Monte and guitarist Arto Lindsay is rich, dreamy and sumptuous, tastfully framing and elevating her sultry, joyous alto. "Perdao Voce" unites the classic bossa nova sound of Antonio Carlos Jobim with the lush, contemplative sound of late '60s Beach Boys (think "Darlin' or "Wild Honey"). "Tema De Amor" and "Nao Va Embora" are rhythmically driven by loping, good-time '70s R&B/funk (War, Rufus/Chaka Khan); the latter has a great "psychedelic soul" sound courtesy of some phased electric sitars.

The sparse yet sultry voice-and-piano "Abololo" evokes a romantic tropical night in a Brazilian nightclub, when it's close to closing time. The majestic "O Que Me Importa" sounds like a great lost late '60s pop gem that Aretha Franklin or Dusty Springfield could've done. Funk dances with samba, fuzzed and burred electric guitars chill alongside delicate flutes and strings, the cosmopolitan past, present, and maybe the future of Sao Paulo and Paris and New York intersect. MEMORIES, CHRONICLES & DECLARATIONS may indeed be the PET SOUNDS or DUSTY IN MEMPHIS of Brazilian pop.
