Elvis Presley Artist Snapshot:

"Before Elvis, there was nothing," John Lennon once said. An overstatement, of course, but Elvis Presley's ascendance to superstardom in the mid-1950s kicked off a musical and social revolution whose impact has yet to abate. After the charming young man from Tupelo, Mississippi was discovered by Sun Records honcho Sam Phillips, the wise studio owner took Presley under his wing, leading to the landmark recording of his first single, "That's All Right (Mama)." The rest, of course, is well-documented history, with Elvis going on to conquer the pop charts, the box office, and beyond. He truly was the King, and his blend of country, pop, and R&B became the cornerstone of rock & roll.

Elvis' '68 COMEBACK SPECIAL was his chance to prove to countless TV viewers that the Elvis who embarrassed himself and his fans in countless lame films and sub-par albums throughout the early-to-mid-'60s was not the real Elvis. This was his attempt to reclaim his rightful place in the world of rock & roll, which had come so far since he helped invent it in the mid-'50s. Over the course of two discs, MEMORIES documents the entire evening, both the prearranged portion of the evening (disc one) and the ad hoc acoustic jam session that was the real highlight of the performance. The real hook here is the presence of several previously unreleased cuts from the latter, which go a long way toward portraying the 1968 Elvis as a man with nothing to prove, possessed of a rock & roll soul he couldn't lose no matter how many white jumpsuits he donned.
