Review

Rolling Stone (6/13/91) - 3.5 Stars - Very Good "...a savvy collection of seasoned folk pop that smoothly reconciles past artistic differences...it exudes a cozy air of hope, intimacy and economy...bring new dimension to the work of two of pop's long-deserving songwriters.."
Spin (p.93) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[A] sunny little set, a more bucolic take on their high-strung power pop..."
Dirty Linen (p.57) - "[The album] continues to resonate with ultra-smooth vocal harmonies, hook-laden folk-pop arrangements, and a scaled-back, electro-acoustic sound."
Musician (5/91) - "...emits some of the darkest vibes this side of the deep blues...Only a fool would cross these cats: They may seem wimpy, but they've got a nasty streak. And that's what makes MAVERICKS so intriguing.."
No Depression (p.67) - "[I]t functions as a reminder of Holsapple and Stamey's sublime songwriting skills."
New York Times (Publisher) (1/1/92) - "..Quiet, gentle guitar-pop, totally unhip and practically timeless.."
Harp (magazine) (pp.111-112) - "[With] tales of heartbreak like 'Close Your Eyes' and 'She Was the One' riding on irresistible melodies and harmonies."

Title Note

Personnel: Peter Holsapple, Chris Stamey (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, keyboards, bass, drums); Gene Holder (guitar), Jane Scarpantoni (cello); Ilene Markell (bass); James MacMillan (bass, vocals); Michael Blair, Alan Bezozi (drums); Chris Butler, Michael Shockley (tambourines).

As the singer-songwriters behind '80s power-pop cult heroes the dB's, Peter Holsapple and Chris Stamey made some serious history together. Reconvening for this duo album years after they initially parted ways, they embraced the more melodic, folk-rock-flavored side of their old sound, largely eschewing the quirkier aspects of the dB's. This move made for a gorgeous collection that highlights the pair's new-wave-Everly Brothers harmonies and undeniable gift for well-crafted compositions.
