Review

"Behind Masters and Johnson's success, however, is a long and frequently disquieting story, one that is told with patience and care by Mr. Maier in MASTERS OF SEX....Neither Masters nor Johnson, it seems, led particularly happy or well-adjusted lives. But there's no denying that they added greatly to the enjoyment of many other people's time on this planet."

"Can the life of a man who spent most of the waking hours of his adult life either having sex, watching sex or talking sex be sad? The answer, as we see in Thomas Maier's eye-opening MASTERS OF SEX is a resounding yes....[The book] is a bombshell. It is also anything but envy-inducing or seductive. And therein...lies its crucial importance."

"Thomas Maier...has provided an important service by presenting two decidedly unworshipful profiles in this first biography of these highly influential and secretive Midwesterners....[His] story of Masters and Johnson is less a picture of white-coated scientists pursuing the secrets of nature than of a tragic couple unable to move beyond the scripts of their childhood."

"Thomas Maier's intelligent and well-conceived biography....[shows that] Masters and Johnson, with their pharmaceutical calm and their vast edifices of data, made sex an over-the-counter commodity -- and, along the way, demolished some entrenched myths."

Publisher's note

In "Masters of Sex," critically acclaimed biographer Thomas Maier offers an unprecedented look at William Masters and Virginia Johnson, their pioneering studies of intimacy, and the sexual revolution they inspired. Masters and Johnson began their secret studies in a small Midwest laboratory, and soon became the nation's top experts on sex. Over the course of more than forty years, they analyzed and explained the secrets of orgasm, emotional fulfillment, and sexual dysfunction. But they divorced after twenty years amid a clash of success, betrayal, and jealousies.

Weaving interviews with the notoriously private William Masters and the ambitious Virginia Johnson, Maier offers a titillating portrait of the legendary couple. Entertaining, revealing, and beautifully told, this groundbreaking book sheds light on the eternal mysteries of desire and intimacy, and their complicated roles in the American psyche.

Annotation

Thomas Maier has written the definitive biography of William Masters and Virginia Johnson, a pair of scientists who employed a decidedly "hands-on" approach to studying the various pleasures of sex. For their groundbreaking studies of the late 1960s, Masters and Johnson, who were married for 29 years, are justly credited with loosening many of the social taboos which formerly stigmatized any discussion of sex, and for helping to establish the fact that personal pleasure, rather than reproduction, was most often the primary purpose of intercourse. However, according to Maier, their methods of scientific inquiry were questionable because they routinely paid subjects to perform sexual acts and were known to actively participate in their own studies in order to record their personal sexual reactions.
