Review

The Wire (p.61) - "[With] insistent dance rhythms that play as folk music but suggesting something almost sinister with sustained exposure...and guitar chords turned liquid via the wah-wah pedal."
Dirty Linen (p.44) - "The group's material is all danceably uptempo, with multiple percussionists playing traditional and contemporary instruments."

Title Note

In the late `60s and early `70s Juaneco Y Su Combo were Peru's foremost purveyors of chica, a style that fused the popular rhythms of Colombian cumbia with Andean folk melodies and western instrumentation. Though Jauneco Y Su drew inspiration from the music of Peru's Shipibo indians, their music also featured spidery, surf-inflected guitar lines and the raucous sounds of the Farfisa organ. The result is thrillingly modern South American pop that sounds like little else from its era.
