Editors Pick:
Miami’s own son group comes up with a beautiful, long-distance
affair. By long distance I mean that you want it to go and keep on going, the
groove is so delicious. The session is a descarga, and the band, which in its
expanded size now sounds like a mainstream salsa orchestra, just swings and
swings, and the solos, especially by the pianist Michel Fragoso, expand the
music, taking it into the 21st century. And that’s the crux of the matter here:
while this is a son group, and the material (check out the depth of swing on
Maracaibo Oriental) dates back to the last century, the conception is different,
modern, the tempos and the improvisations suggesting knowledge and modernity.
Really good stuff, and clearly a party I’d like to attend. And I’d like to hear
them do some writing, and stretch out in a way they’re clearly able to do.
Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous, 2008-02-01)
