Title Note

For those unfamiliar with the music of Jules Massenet (1842-1912), two quotes regarding his style and influence may pique your interest. The eminent musicologist Paul Henry Lang, speaking of Massenet's suave, sensuous, charming, sentimental melodies, wrote "There is a bit of Massenet in every Frenchman of whatever generation." And critic Romain Rolland hears "a slumbering Massenet" in the heart of every subsequent French composer, which would include Faur‚, Debussy, Ravel and Poulenc.

If you're still ambivalent, consider these points. 'Tha‹s' is a Romantic opera concerning the conversion of a prostitute in Alexandria ca. 300 C.E. (masterfully portrayed by soprano Ren‚e Fleming) through the efforts of a Christian monk (here the talented dramatic tenor Thomas Hampson), who subsequently is tormented by his passion for the convert. The drama revolves around their complex relationship, with some of the finest vocal music and subtlest dramatic turns in all of French opera.

Ably directed by Yves Abel, Fleming and Hampson sing with dramatic and vocal brilliance. This gem of a disc gives Massenet's opera a cast and interpretation worthy of its music.
